I have done proposal photos in Edinburgh for almost 10 years.
Arthur’s Seat is one of the proposal locations in my 7 Most Popular Spots Where to Propose in Edinburgh Guide.
Thinking of popping the question with a view? Let’s talk about proposing on Arthur’s Seat, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic spots. If you’re the adventurous type — and she is too — this can be an unforgettable way to mark your engagement. But before you lace up your boots and hide the ring, here are a few important things to consider to make sure the moment is as magical as the view.
Before You Decide to Propose on Arthur’s Seat…
1. Scottish Weather – Expect the Unexpected
Scotland’s weather is a character of its own — unpredictable, dramatic, and sometimes downright wild. On a sunny day, the view from the top of Arthur’s Seat is breathtaking. But if the wind picks up or the rain rolls in, it quickly becomes dangerous. The path can get slippery, and let’s face it, proposing while soaked and battling gusty wind isn’t quite the dream scenario.
I’ve done proposals up there in the rain — but those couples were experienced hikers and didn’t mind getting wet. If you’re set on this location, keep a close eye on the forecast. I usually check in with you a couple of days beforehand to confirm if it’s still a go.
💡If it’s just wind, we might still have options. If it’s rain — well, then it’s raining everywhere. More on backup plans below.
2. Will She Actually Want to Climb It?
You might be all in for the adventure, but is she? Be honest — will she love the idea or struggle halfway up and hate every minute? It’s happened before. On two occasions, the climb was cut short when the partner wasn’t up for it, and we had to pivot fast. Not ideal for nerves — or ankles!
If there’s any doubt, don’t worry — I’ll suggest some great alternatives further down.

3. What Kind of Photos Are You Hoping For?
This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s worth thinking about: after the proposal, we’ve got about 30–40 minutes for portraits. On Arthur’s Seat, your backdrop is dramatic and simple — city views, rocky ledges, and moody skies.
If you’re dreaming of a wider variety of backgrounds (buildings, greenery, monuments), Arthur’s Seat might not be the best pick. Calton Hill, for example, offers more diversity without the uphill commitment.
💡Want both? We can add an extra hour and shoot at the base of Arthur’s Seat afterward — think cliffs, ponds, and quieter beauty spots.
4. What’s the Backup Plan for Windy Days?
What’s the Backup Plan for Windy Days?
Wind is part of the Arthur’s Seat experience — but if there’s a gale or an amber weather warning, we’re staying grounded. If it’s “just” windy (not rainy), we can pivot to:
Calton Hill – Great city views, easily accessible, and tons of portrait possibilities.
Lower Arthur’s Seat Crags – Still dramatic, still scenic, but much safer. Fewer people, too.
Halfway Up Arthur’s Seat – A hidden gem! Quiet and still gives you that “on the hill” vibe without the full trek.
Also: Beware the Haar
That mysterious Edinburgh fog, known as haar, can roll in fast and cover the entire peak in thick mist — think white-out conditions. I’ve photographed proposals during the haar before (on Calton Hill instead), and the vibe is more “lost in the clouds” than “Instagram-worthy panorama.”
5. Top Alternatives to Arthur’s Seat
If the full climb isn’t quite right, but you still would like to have that outdoors wild look, here are a few other options:
Calton Hill
Probably my most popular proposal spot — easy walk, panoramic views, and plenty of photo variety. 80% of my proposals happen here!
My Calton Hill Guide here.
Lower Crags at Arthur’s Seat
A small cliff near a pond — gentle climb, unique view, and usually very quiet. Super easy to get there and we can then after come down and have some shots around the pond or just go into the meadow with Arthur’s Seat as a backdrop.
The Meadow Crags
A mild hike that gives you views of both Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat. Plus, it’s flat enough for us to get creative with portraits.
Halfway Up Arthur’s Seat
Secluded, peaceful, and gives you the feel of Arthur’s Seat without the full effort. You’re “faking it” in the best way.
Hopefully, these tips help you feel more prepared (and a little more excited) about proposing on Arthur’s Seat or one of Edinburgh’s other stunning spots. I’m here to help you plan it right — and capture it perfectly. Let’s make it unforgettable.
