Edinburgh Proposals at Botanic Gardens

Hey everyone,
Armands here from A-Fotografy, your go-to Edinburgh proposal photographer. Today, I will walk you through one of the locations for surprise proposals — the Edinburgh Botanic Garden.

I’ve photographed quite a few proposals here, and I wanted to share some insider tips, ideal spots, and a few things you should know before choosing this lush and peaceful location.

This beautiful place is also featured in my 7 Most Popular Locations for Edinburgh Proposals — you can catch a video walkthrough from May 2025 on that post.

Why Choose the Botanic Garden?

If you’re someone who enjoys nature, quiet moments, and a bit of privacy, the Botanics might be the perfect proposal spot for you. It’s not for those chasing dramatic cityscapes, it’s for romantics who love green gardens, scenic walks, and tranquil beauty.

One of my favourite things about the Botanics is how easy it is to find hidden corners with barely anyone around. Even on busier days, my go-to spots are usually quiet, maybe just one or two people strolling nearby. That means you get to pop the question in peace, without an audience.

And if it’s drizzling? No problem. The towering trees provide great natural cover, so your moment isn’t ruined by a little Scottish weather.

WARNING! A Quick Heads-Up

The garden is huge, so I always ask couples to choose their proposal spot ahead of time. This helps avoid awkward situations where I have to follow you around trying not to be noticed (trust me — done that once, nearly missed the moment!).

If you can’t see me, I probably can’t see you either!

Best Time to Visit

My top recommendation? Mid-May. That’s when the gardens truly come to life. The flowers are blooming, everything’s lush and vibrant — it’s a photographer’s dream and a lover’s paradise.

Best Proposal Spots in the Edinburgh Botanics

Most of the proposals I’ve captured are near the East Gate, which makes logistics super easy. You can just walk in, go to the chosen spot, and do your thing — no stressful wandering, no need to worry about her noticing the ring in your pocket.

Here are my top three spots (plus one optional one):

1. Large Birch Tree by the Caledonian Hall

Best for: Quick, simple proposals right near the entrance
This was the location of my very first Botanics proposal shoot. It’s right by the entrance — easy to find, beautiful, and discreet. Just walk under the tree, get down on one knee, and you’re good to go.

2. Waterfall Bridge

Best for: Classic garden vibes, but can be busy
This is a favorite for many couples, but honestly? Not my top pick. On busy days, there’s often a queue for photos on the bridge, and it can feel rushed. Also, visibility for me as the photographer isn’t ideal — angles are tricky.
That said, I always bring couples back here after the proposal for some dreamy shots — it’s definitely photogenic once the pressure’s off.

3. Chinese Hillside Bridge

Best for: A peaceful alternative to Waterfall Bridge
If you like the idea of proposing on a bridge but want more space and privacy, this is a better choice. The bridge is wider, and I’ve figured out the perfect vantage point for photos — we just need to coordinate your position beforehand.

4. Big Trees Grove (Upper Woodland Area)

Best for: Majestic, forest-like vibes
This is hands-down my favorite spot. It’s grand, private, and just breathtaking — the kind of place that feels right for a life-changing moment.
Bonus: it’s also a popular wedding ceremony spot during summer. So if you’re planning a Saturday proposal, check ahead in case there’s a wedding happening.
Check out this proposal I shot here — she was totally caught off guard, and the moment was just perfect.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope this guide helped you get a better feel for what a proposal at the Edinburgh Botanic Garden can be like. If you have questions or want help planning the moment — just reach out. I’d love to be part of your story.
