Planning an engagement photoshoot can feel a little intimidating at first, especially if you’ve never been professionally photographed before. The good news is that you don’t need any modelling experience or know exactly what to do.

My approach is relaxed, natural, and focused on genuine connection rather than stiff poses or forced smiles. Through simple prompts and gentle guidance, I’ll help you feel comfortable in front of the camera so your photographs reflect who you really are as a couple.

Whether you’re celebrating a recent proposal, creating images for save-the-date cards, or simply documenting this exciting chapter in your lives, an engagement photoshoot is a wonderful way to create meaningful memories together.

Favourite Engagement Photo Locations in Edinburgh

Choosing the right location can make a huge difference to your engagement photos. Edinburgh offers everything from dramatic city views and historic architecture to peaceful parks and hidden corners away from the crowds.
Over the years, I’ve photographed couples in many different locations across the city. Here are some of my favourite spots for engagement photography in Edinburgh.

1. Calton Hill – City views and variety in every direction.

Calton Hill is one of the most popular locations for engagement photography in Edinburgh, and for good reason. Within just a few minutes’ walk, you’ll find sweeping views across the city, historic monuments, dramatic stone architecture, and plenty of open space.

It’s a fantastic choice for couples who want iconic Edinburgh photographs without committing to a long walk. The variety of backgrounds also means we can create a diverse gallery of images without needing to travel between locations.

For the best experience, I usually recommend sunrise or quieter times of the day. Calton Hill can become very busy during sunset, particularly in summer, which can make it difficult to create the relaxed and intimate atmosphere many couples are looking for during their engagement session.

2. Holyrood Park & Arthur’s Seat – Wild Scotland in the Heart of Edinburgh

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, Holyrood Park offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Edinburgh. With rugged landscapes, open grass areas, and views towards Arthur’s Seat, it often feels more like the Scottish Highlands than a city park.

This location is perfect for couples who love the outdoors and want engagement photographs with a natural, relaxed feel. There is plenty of space to wander, explore, and create photographs without feeling rushed or surrounded by people.

The changing seasons also make Holyrood Park a great choice throughout the year, from colourful autumn tones to fresh spring greenery.

3. Circus Lane – Edinburgh’s Most Photographed Street

Located in the heart of Stockbridge, Circus Lane is one of the most photographed streets in Edinburgh. Its colourful doors, cobbled streets, climbing plants, and characterful architecture create a beautiful backdrop for engagement photography.

The surrounding Stockbridge area offers even more variety, including independent cafés, quiet residential streets, and the Water of Leith walkway. Together they create a relaxed atmosphere that feels very different from Edinburgh’s more famous tourist locations.

This is an excellent choice for couples who want engagement photographs with plenty of personality and a more intimate city feel.

4. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the city’s most beautiful locations for engagement photography. With seasonal flowers, mature trees, winding paths, and carefully maintained gardens, it provides an elegant setting in every season.

One of the biggest advantages of the Botanic Gardens is the variety available within a relatively small area. Whether you’re looking for colourful blooms, lush greenery, or peaceful corners away from the crowds, there are countless opportunities for natural and relaxed photographs.

It’s particularly popular during spring and summer, but the gardens remain beautiful throughout the year and offer something different every time I visit.

After I proposed (which was captured beautifully) he revealed himself to us and we had a lovely chat. Afterwards he had us pose around Arthur’s seat. What to Expect from Your Engagement Session

Once we have agreed on the date, you will pay half the amount to reserve the date. The second half would be paid once the photos are ready.

The number of photographs you receive will depend on the type of session and how much travelling is involved between locations.
If we’re exploring several areas around Edinburgh, we’ll naturally spend more time walking and less time taking photographs. If we stay within a single location, you can typically expect 60+ images per hour of coverage.

Absolutely. Dogs are part of the family and often help couples relax during the session.

Most engagement sessions last around one hour, which is usually enough time to explore a location, get comfortable in front of the camera, and create a varied gallery of photographs.
If you’d like to visit multiple locations or have something more adventurous in mind, longer sessions can be arranged. I’ll always be happy to suggest a suitable amount of time based on your plans.

The most important thing is to wear something that feels like you. Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident rather than something you would never normally wear.
Neutral colours and outfits that complement each other tend to photograph well, but there are no strict rules. I generally recommend avoiding large logos, busy patterns, or anything that might distract from the connection between the two of you.
If you’re unsure, feel free to send me a few options before the session and I’ll happily give my opinion.

I know you’ll be excited to see your photographs, so I always aim to deliver them as quickly as possible.
Most engagement sessions are delivered within a week, often sooner during quieter periods. Your images will be delivered through a private online gallery where you can view, download, and share your photographs with family and friends.

Engagement Photography Pricing

My standard rate for city engagement photoshoots is £300, which gives you plenty of time for a photo session at your chosen location. It also includes your digital copies.

Travel outside Edinburgh is available for an additional charge, depending on the location and travel time involved.
If you’d like to explore multiple locations or create a more varied gallery of photographs, additional coverage can be added at £150 per hour. This gives us more time to wander, discover different backdrops, and create a wider range of images without feeling rushed.

Looking for something a little more adventurous? I’m always happy to travel further afield for engagement sessions in Glencoe, the Scottish Highlands, or other spectacular locations across Scotland. If you have an idea in mind, I’d love to hear it.

Travelling to Edinburgh for an Engagement Photoshoot?

I am always happy to hear from couples visiting Edinburgh from elsewhere in the UK or overseas.

Perhaps you’re planning to get engaged while visiting Scotland, or maybe you’ve recently become engaged and want to celebrate with a photoshoot in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Many of my couples travel from overseas specifically to create engagement or pre-wedding style photographs in Edinburgh and beyond.

Over the years, I have photographed couples visiting from Hong Kong, Japan, China and many other parts of the world. Some prefer a relaxed engagement session exploring the city together, while others choose a more elaborate experience, complete with formal attire and multiple locations.

If you’re planning a destination engagement session, there are often a few extra details worth considering:

Do any of your chosen locations require photography permits or permissions?
How will you travel between locations during the session?
Will you be changing outfits during the shoot?
Are you looking for natural photographs, or something more editorial and fashion-inspired?
Would you like to include locations outside Edinburgh, such as Glencoe or the Scottish Highlands?
